The first half of the pilot film (pilots in anime might better be called "presentation films") for Tezuka "God of Manga" Osamu's "Dororo." Here's the timeline (some of which overlaps):

August 27, 1967-July 22, 1968: Manga runs in Shōgakkan Weekly Shōnen Sunday. Stops without a conclusive ending.
January, 1968: Anime pilot film made (that's this thing)
April 6-September 28, 1969: Anime series runs 26 eps on Fuji TV. Black & white despite the pilot being in color, apparently due to budgetary reasons. Re-titled "Dororo to Hyakkimaru" ("Dororo and Hyakkimaru") from Episode 14. Has a conclusive ending.
July-October, 1969: Manga concludes in Akita Shōten Bōken-Oh (Monthly) (Entire manga available in US from Vertical, Inc.)
September 9, 2004: PS2 Game by Sega, released in the US September 21 as "Blood Will Tell"
January 6, 2007: Live action feature film, US premier New York Asian Film Festival June 22, 2008, released on US DVD by Universal Sept 23, 2008

I don't when I'll be done with the second half, because Dororo speaks in this "baby dialect" that I have a hard time understanding, let alone translating.

No? Well, it was worth a shot.

  • I would love to see the series revitalized with modern and well, less childish animation.

  • @somerandompagan The character design in the series proper *was* somewhat less cartoonish.

  • @somerandompagan Then You should get a PS2 and play Blood Will Tell (Yes, it's the Dororo video game, complete with a hypothetical ending).

  • @SaitohYatate I don't have a PS2, but I've been thinking of getting the game, just for the sake of completion. I'd put it on my DVD shelf, between the TV series box and the live action movie.

  • Y'know, it really sucks that this hasn't been given more recognition. Dororo is one of my favourite manga.

  • @PowerDohnut I blame Vertical's covers ^_^

  • @jakeh2034 Well, it WAS the late 60s.

  • totally amazing - one of the all time best manga - this anime version is very, very good - someone out there please release or fansub more of this.................

  • YES. 1000 times YES! I've been wanting to see this subbed for so many years. Dororo is my absolute favorite work of Tezuka's. I've read the manga, seen the movie and watched a walkthrough of the video game - all of them were unsatisfactory to me for completely different reasons. The manga, of course, is gorgeous genius until the end. I've been so curious about how the anime handles the story and frustrated that it gets so little recognition. Ah well, this little bit of it is glorious.

  • The animation seems... Lame? Too childish, maybe?

I remember seeing the movie now. That was good.
