Hi alan

how does it form the picture if you just made curves?

@fortworthmuseum Viewed outside in the sun? Yes, the dark color is just for contrast. You can also view these at night under a bright streetlight. But when indoors, the only thing that works is a video projector (used as a spotlight. Or try a slide projector.)

@Synthbin Yep, if the arcs are "U" shape, the hologram floats out in space. If the arcs are rainbow-shape, the hologram stays deep beneath the surface.
And if you turn the hologram upside-down, the image turns inside-out, so deep parts now are protruding outside.

@rodRioNee go find the Scratch Hologram FAQ on the Amasci original project website. In a dark classroom your light source can be a video projector, slide projector, etc. Use it as a spotlight. Keep the light source a few meters away from the hologram.
Outdoors at night, a streetlight makes a great light source.

This is Really Cool, But does it project lke a true sci-fi hologram ? I mean does the
illusion make it look like the tree is actually floating in mid air(sticking out from the glas) or is it the otherway: It looks like its 1 feet down in the glass?(like a fish under water)

When you follow along the pattern you are essentially scratching an outline of the picture.

We did some experiments today, and we couldn’t get the image to appear on clear plexi. We initially thought that the black was used for contrast only. After we did a hologram on clear we put different colors of paper behind it including black and still could not see the image. There must be something magical about black plexi!!

if u just draw lines, how does the image appear?

Good morning, I'd suggest you try one with lines and one the way the video recommends and see what happens. Please let me know what your result are. Good luck with the Science Fair and have fun!

Would I be able to make more complex designs in it, or would it become lost eventually?

You are limited only by the width of each scratch, and the point where each scratch intersects, so you could put thousands of lines on each one. Each scratch turns into a point of light, so the sky is the limit. It will take some precision to make complex designs as well as good tools and practice. The only place it may become lost is at the intersection of lines, where they cross. At that point one of the lines is interrupted, but it should not be noticeable.
