:) Do you have a video about how you came to live in Japan? Was it your marriage? School? I would love to visit that country someday and was just curious about your story, if you are willing to share it. If not, I understand.
It's a bit more complicated than that where i live in the USA or perhaps just the way my specific social circle works. If i were dropping by someones place unannounced the person i visit will usually step outside for a quick chat. If you wanted to stay a while you would phone ahead of time to make sure that they are available, not so much that they can serve you anything. Guests and family are different and they will be offered coffee or tea and perhaps cookies or cake but usually nothing more.
this is interesting. this is surprising because it is a circumstance where it seems more like uk culture than american culture is. what i mean is, in the UK i don't find it to be an unusual thing to simply knock on the door of a friend if I am walking past and say Hi. I was surprised that this could be considered rude in the USA.
in the UK people also talk on the doorstep a lot or in the hall, but it is not unusual to invite somebody in if business is likely to take longer than 10 minutes.
This is a very Asian thing I think. All my Vietnamese and Chinese friends do the same exact thing. They will show up at my house at any time they please hahaha. I used to have one Vietnamese friend that would knock on my door at 7am 3 days a week wanting to talk...
these are the kind of videos i like best, social norms for everyday interactions. I'm off to Japan in a couple weeks to start a new job and this stuff will help me i'm sure. Thanks allot!
@tremault It's similar over here in Germany.

It used to freak me out too when people would just open the door and step in. I keep the door locked now. Haha!
