A cut from "Goin' Places," the final album by the original Kingston Trio of Bob Shane, Nick Reynolds, and Dave Guard, "Billy Goat Hill" was written by composer Jim Day and folk writer/performer George Arno, who also composed the hit single "Marianne" for the Gateway Singers. "Billy Goat Hill" achieved modest chart success as a single record, reaching the mid-40s on the Billboard charts. Shortly after its release, Dave Guard resigned from the Kingston Trio to pursue other musical interests. He was replaced by singer/songwriter John Stewart.

Lazy Jim Day didn't write this. Jim Day who just died in recent years wrote it. He lived in Los Angeles.

Jim was my Godfather. He was a funny, talented tall drink of water, went to college on a basketball scholarship but had to quit his senior year to support his family when his dad died. Last year when he died he left a wonderful wife, Barbara all alone as they had no children. They are both quality folks. We miss him.

I love this song. Have since I was a young child of about 8 and was first shown how to operate the record player by my older sister.
