Bamboo sucks.

I'm sorry PermaGods.

I know that bamboo is like the holy grail of renewable products. It has many uses. You can eat it, you can build stuff out of it, and it grows super fast. But when you don't want it, it really screws up your back yard. I don't have a big back yard at all and this bamboo seems like it'll devour my whole garden in a few days if left unchecked.

The problem gets worse because there aren't any seemingly good answers on the internet on how to deal with bamboo. Some say to just smother it with a sheet mulch but I don't want to have dirt in this area, I just want normal lawn. Others suggest hammering metal into the ground to block the runners from going any further, but that just seems like a pain and I feel like it still wouldn't work.

I settled on digging up some of the bamboo plants closest to my house, hoping that would stop the runners. I also plucked out all the bamboo plants and sprayed their roots with RoundUp. Hopefully that combo will kill the plant once and for all.

I feel a little guilty about using RoundUp, since, you know, Monsanto is the devil and all. But I guess sometimes you have to make a deal with the devil for the greater good.

  • Just make sure you don't spread any of it (stem, root, any part of it) around or it'll get worse!! :)

  • Man you are dissing the wrong plant, that's not Bamboo!

  • You are battling Japanese Knotweed. Also known as mexican bamboo,

(Fallopia Japonica) This is a bad invasive.

This is not the same as the Invasive Running Bamboo that is

Giant Timber Bamboo. Similar in that it is very invasive.

May want to retitle the video to Japanese Knotweed.Good video.

  • For the last ten years myself and 4 of my 5 neighbors have been fighting bamboo. The 5th neighbor (she actually likes the stuff) keeps us from being able to get rid of it. I've come to the conclusion that the easiest way to overcome bamboo is to move.

  • Dude grow some weed.. it might help with your bogus bamboo/flea paranoia :)

  • Too much talking about yurself

  • Not bamboo

  • 1) This isnt bamboo. 2) If you continually cut down bamboo culms, it WILL kill the grove. Bamboo, like any plant, needs something to turn the sunlight into food: Leaves. Without this the grove WILL die, it can NOT exist on roots alone. This is fundamental.

  • 2:39 "There's flees in my compost too..." LOL you are hilarious :)

  • @stevelau1933 yeah, i know of a bunch of places where knotweed grows, you can actually eat the young shoots, it tastes a bit like rhubarb.
