As an American that just spend four days in Dazhai (during a month long trip) I can say that this report is still accurate a year later, mostly. Dazhai is very touristized though, as large numbers of domestic tourists come here on a pseudo-pilgrimage because of Mao's statement.

great piece for something that we rarely see out of china

chinese are a motivated people. if only geniuses were employed to guide their energy for maximum efficiency.
