  • What happens if you dont remove the pups from the mother plant? Will they still grow like normal?

  • @briarbehr Yes, removing pups is optional. You tend to get more pups from a plant if you remove them. But if you prefer the more natural look of a clump of plants then just leave them on the mother plant.

  • how do you fertilize them?

  • @DRenae08 I use a slow release fertilizer when I pot up the pups. Either an osmocote/plantacote product which is high in potassium (K) or sheep manure pellets. This tends to be enough for most Aechmeas, Guzmanias Neoregelias, Nidulariums and small Vrieseas. Large Vrieseas can benefit from a very dilute (quarter strength) foliar orchid food once a month, but it isn't absolutely necessary. I don't feed Billbergias at all.

    I hope this helps.

    Cheers, Todd

  • I bought my first 2 bromeliads last May (in flower) and the flowers are still there in mid Feb. One's looking a bit dry but the other seems almost as good as the day I bought it. They've been in a shade garden all the time. How long do the flowers normally last and should I be cutting them off? And will the original plant flower again?

One plant now has 3 smallish pups and the other has about 8 (this is the one with the drier flower). I'll wait until they get bigger then do the division.

  • @shambolicaus Hi, it sounds like you're doing quite a good job with your first broms (probably Guzmanias). The flowers on Guzmanias typically last about 6 months, but can vary depending on the hybrid and growing conditions. You can cut off the flower and remove any dead leaves whenever you like - it's purely a matter of aesthetics.

The original plant will only flower once, then produce pups which will each produce a flower.

    I hope this helps.

    Cheers, Todd
