Somali-born author, feminist and former Dutch Parliament Member Ayaan Hirsi Ali discusses her disillusionment with the Islamic faith of her birth.

-----

Ayaan Hirsi Ali discusses "Is Islam Compatible with Liberal Democracy?" with Clive Crook at the 2007 Aspen Ideas Festival.

Some of the most inspired and provocative thinkers, writers, artists, business people, teachers and other leaders drawn from myriad fields and from across the country and around the world all gathered in a single place - to teach, speak, lead, question, and answer at the 2006 Aspen Ideas Festival. Throughout the week, they all interacted with an audience of thoughtful people who stepped back from their day-to-day routines to delve deeply into a world of ideas, thought, and discussion.

Ayaan Hirsi Ali is an outspoken defender of women's rights in Islamic societies. Ms. Hirsi Ali was born in Mogadishu, Somalia. She escaped an arranged marriage by immigrating to the Netherlands in 1992, and served as a member of the Dutch parliament from 2003 to 2006.

In parliament, she worked on furthering the integration of non-Western immigrants into Dutch society, and on defending the rights of women in Dutch muslim society. In 2004, together with director Theo van Gogh, she made Submission, a film about the oppression of women in conservative Islamic cultures. Ms. Hirsi Ali is currently a Resident Fellow at the American Enterprise Institute.

Clive Crook is a senior editor of The Atlantic and chief Washington commentator of The Financial Times. In addition, he writes a column for National Journal and serves as chief editorial adviser to David Bradley, the chairman of Atlantic Media Group. He was formerly on the staff of The Economist, latterly from 1993 to 2005 as deputy editor. A graduate of Oxford and the London School of Economics, he has served as a consultant to The World Bank and worked as an official in the British Treasury. He lives in Washington, DC.

  • She's completely correct. It's a matter of intelligence. Most people simply haven't evolved enough to understand, or are too scared to even think about non-existence. It's not just Islam, it's all religion. Only sheep need a shepherd. If you can't have happiness without the existence of a deity watching over you and guiding you, that is a pathetic thing indeed. All religion has provided us, is with a reason to hate those who are different. Religion is a synonym for ignorance.

  • She is an amazing woman. I`ve read Infidel and I was imagining her voice the entire time, imagining scenes with her and her sister, father, people in Holand. But, actually hearing her voice, well, that is just amazing. I admire her very much and I felt really connected to her while reading Infidel on a deeply female way, that only women can understand.

  • Having intelligence is one thing, but being so arrogant to think you can answer everthing is just plain stupid. Live life without regrets thats intelligence.

  • @MALIRIPPA Fuck right off.

  • she is ashamed of her country

one thing to hate ur own skin colour but if you even hate what nation u were born into its quite sad

there is no self hating woman on earth like ayan she borderline wishes she was white

marrying a white man wont make you white. infertile self hating bitch

  • never a muslim or even somalian!! she is of kenyan christian heritage.

  • It's terrible what her brainwashed bitch of a grandmother had done to this beautiful, graceful, intelligent woman when she was just a young child.

  • She is an amazing woman, I admire her

  • my Sister speaks of PATRIARCHY, not Islam. every religion has extremists & Prophet Muhammad (saws) expressly spoke AGAINST extremism in religion. bin laden was an extremist, as is pat robertson, as are many MEN who kill, maim & control in the "name of God." we all need to get it right.

  • She has put Mohammed, Koran & Allah right under her boot. She is the reason why Muslim girls

    need an education.
