"I'd Do Anything for Love (But I Won't Do That)" is a song composed and written by Jim Steinman, and recorded by Meat Loaf. The song was released in 1993[citation needed] as the first single from the album Bat Out of Hell II: Back into Hell. The title of the song confused some listeners, who were curious to know what "that" is.

The final verse features a female vocalist who was credited only as "Mrs. Loud" in the album notes. She was later identified as Lorraine Crosby, a club performer from North East England.[2] She does not, however, appear in the video, in which her vocals are lipsynched by Dana Patrick. Meat Loaf promoted the single with American vocalist Patti Russo performing the live female vocals.

The song was a commercial success, reaching number one in twenty-eight countries.[1] The single was certified platinum in the United States and became Meat Loaf's first number-one single on the Billboard Hot 100 chart and on the UK singles chart. The song earned Meat Loaf a Grammy Award for Best Rock Vocal Performance, Solo.

I don't understand the confusion. Stupid Vh1 put this as one of their awesomely bad songs. One of the running 'jokes' was what the hell does 'that' mean? It doesn't take a grand song interpreter to figure it out. Read the lyrics more than once Vh1.

@sturm097able I gotta agree with u bud. I don't get why Meatloaf's song is on the "awesomely bad" list. Why wasn't "Blame It On The Rain" on the list? They even chose Michael Jackson's Rock My World because it's a song about MJ having a crush on a chick, while obv. picking on his "child molesting" trials. Vh1 and/or Blender created a pretty terrible list. Although, I will agree that Sisqo's Thong Song and 4 Non Blonde's "What's Up?" should be on "awesomely bad" list.
