NEW YORK, NY - With the Hurricane Irene Path becoming more certain as it approaches land, New York City ordered the evacuation of more than 250,000 people and began preparations to shut down the entire mass transit system in NYC, both of which are unprecedented measures for the city.

In May 2009, the Obama administration conducted a simulation exercise around the possibility of a Category 3 hurricane hitting New York City, White House spokesman Josh Earnest told reporters Friday according to CBS News.

"The federal government's preparation for this storm didn't just begin as the
clouds started to gather and form a tropical depression," Earnest told reporters.

New York state Governor Andrew Cuomo activated 900 National Guard troops while airlines moved aircraft from the danger zone and canceled at least 1,000 flights and the city's four zoos stocked up to keep the animals fed.

Bridges leading to the island of Manhattan could be closed if winds exceed 60 mph.

"We've never done a mandatory evacuation before and we wouldn't be doing it now if we didn't think this storm had the potential to be very serious," Mayor Michael Bloomberg told a news conference today.

According to weather.com (The Weather Channel) there have only been five hurricanes that have tracked within 75 miles of New York City from 1851 to 1985 with the last one.

The New York Times has reported a spokesman for the Federal Reserve Bank of New York as saying, "We are monitoring the storm and have contingency plans in place and multiple levels of redundancies to ensure regular operational functioning."

Additionally, Bloomberg is reporting that Hurricane Irene has the potential to shut down the New York Stock Exchange, according to a NYSE company executive.

Hurricane Irene Preparedness
Time is running out, but here are some hurricane survival tips for surviving what some are calling a 100 year weather event.

•Need any meds filled? Do it when you go out to get the baby food if the pharmacy is still open, or else early tomorrow morning if the pharmacy is now closed.
•Do you have a generator? Get extra gas for it, but bear in mind that a generator MUST be used outside, and if you put a generator outside you MUST have security to protect it. Generators (and also window air conditioning units) are stolen a lot in the aftermath of major disasters where power is lost for an extended time. Generators will also attract attention to you and your family. Bear that in mind before you fire it up.
•Your frozen foods will be OK for up to 48 hours without power IF you do not open the freezer door, and you stuff every vacant spot in that freezer with bowls or bottles of water before you go to bed tonight at the latest. Right now would be better. But after 48 hours, if you don't have power, you are going to loose that food.
•If you are in a danger area and riding out the storm, designate ONE person located out of the region who will be the contact person for info abut you. Text them if texting still works. If you have a Facebook page change the password and let this contact person know it - hey can then post info to your FB page. You can always change back the password after you regain internet service.
Hurricane Irene was spreading her clouds over the southeastern U.S. on Friday, August 26, and NASA satellites were flying overhead gathering data. Coastal evacuations were already happening in New York City, coastal New Jersey, Delaware, Maryland, Virginia, and North and South Carolina.

NASA satellites gathered rainfall measurements and saw heavy rain and hot towering thunderstorms around Irene's center signaling the power behind her. Even on August 25, the Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission (TRMM) satellite saw rainfall in intense bands of thunderstorms around her eye, that were dropping rainfall at 2 inches (50 mm) per hour.

Regarded as one of the best doo-wop groups of the 1950s, the Spaniels were one of the first groups signed to the African American-owned Vee-Jay label in 1953, when its members were just out of high school. Like many other black performers of the era, their greatest success, the 1954 single Goodnight Sweetheart, Goodnight, could have been an even bigger pop hit if not for a cover version by the McGuire Sisters, who turned it into a top-ten hit. The first leg of the Spaniels recording career lasted until 1960, when the groups poor chart performances led its members to disband and pursue solo careers. Re-formed in 1969 under the leadership of original member James Pookie Hudson, the Spaniels found receptive audiences on the oldies concert circuit and brought their music to a new generation of doo-wop fans. As the group approached the fiftieth anniversary of its founding, the Spaniels were still making concert appearances with their hits Baby, Its You, Everyones Laughing, and the now-classic Goodnight Sweetheart, Goodnight.
