Interesting thoughts on Garrett's sound. I always felt like his setup was purposefully sharp in order to make him keep his throat open to achieve a fatter sound. Garrett's sound is very edgy and projects, but it is also extremely fat. . .like a tenor. Interesting throughts guys. Thanks
True. I am primarily an Altoist. I play soprano as well. I've played tenor in the past as well, but hated how I played it. I hear myself on alto. Yes, Alto is different. It has a different history, different sonarity, etc. Alto sounds good in classical music. Tenor, frankly, sounds awful in classical music. Alto does take A LOT of work to get a decent sound, etc., and I would say that it even augments one's tenor playing. Keep the videos coming!
Thunder- Finding myself drifting to the tenor as well. Though I don't want to drop my alto which has 15yrs of experience over the tenor. What kind of alto mpc do you use? I'm due for a new one and looking for that edge you described in your sound with your current setup. Appreciate your videos!
I took a little bit of a different path, I started on Tenor, and always loved the low end of the horn, then eventually switched to bari as my primary horn. It wasnt until then that I found the Alto as my "upper voice" to my bari. I eventually sold my tenor and havent played it for years. It seems like I hear and think in Eb as a default but theres a strange phenominon that I face where I feel like Im approaching both horns like a tenor and it makes me miss it!. I dig your lessons Shawn!
Interesting perspective for me. Hearing the sax players' point of view. Helps me as a trumpet player to know where you guys are coming from. Great stuff!

I'll quote Rob Scheps on this one: "The Alto is the beginner horn!"
