The thing was, that year, the Yankees had a starting outfield of Hideki Matsui, Johnny Damon and Bobby Abreu, with a younger, faster Melky Cabrera as the primary back-up. I'm not so sure a fifth outfielder would have been that good use of a roster space. Of course, they shot themselves in the foot that year by using the Doug Mientkiewicz/Josh Phelps platoon at first base. The better use of the roster space? Use Mientkiewicz's Gold Glove at first most of the time and use Bernie as an OF/1B.

didnt get his just due imo. 16 loyal years, stood true in 1998 wen boston offered more money and he kept those pinstripes even being slapped in the face with their original offer. 300 career avg, 280 hrs, 1300 rbi 5 gold gloves and 4 rings. most franchise postseason hr's, rbi, and second in hits. was solid player, he didnt put up griffey or bonds numbers but he was a winner, never stirred contraversy and he was loved by the fans and was as clutch as you get

Wow i thought i was the only one that felt that Mr.Bernie Williams didn't get treated by the orginazation the way he deserve to be treated he is and will always be a class act i think what Bernie deserved was to be able to go out on his own terms and be able to get his 300th Career homerun and finish his career with over 2500 hits that was more than possible and the yankees shitted on that .

The Yanks should have given Bernie whatever he wanted, the guy is a "true" Yankee, a proven winner, and a legend. There is no way he should have gone out on bad terms.
