This is a short seven second 3D matchmove I did for my visual effects class. I modeled an Arachnid from the movie StarShip Troopers with a few of my own alterations, textured it, lite it, tracked it, color corrected it, rotoscoped it and composited it all. Since I'm not an animator and this is my first animation of this kind, I am very pleased with the way it turned out. Some of you wonder what software I used to create it, I used Maya for modeling the arachnid, Adobe Photoshop to produce the textures for the model, PFTracker to track the bug into the shot, Shake to composite the shot, and Final cut for sound and breakdowns. more videos at www.craftvfx.com

  • how did u animate it?

  • @anxs220

with Autodesk Maya and watching the movie, Starship Troopers. Going frame by frame for movement reference, always had the arachnid with two feet on the ground at a time

  • here is the big question.... was it easy?

  • @6BlackWood9

no. First you have to film it, track the shot, model teh arachind, texture the arachind, light the arachnid, animate it, render it out, composite the shot, add sound effects, and do any final color correction. it took 7 weeks

  • Wow good job

  • that looks really good!

  • lol be aware that the arachnid warrior is actually BIGGER. than that.

  • you cant do a 7 weeks tutorial i guess....

  • Can you scan a video and take an animation out of that? Like a normal video with only one animated person.

  • Very cool. Though I'm a bit of a starship trooper buff so I have to say that I think the uh, snout/muzzle of the arachnid is a little too long, but that's just me lol.

This has a quality feel to it that I'd expect to find on Syfy. Some might take that as an insult (Syfy's Channel's graphics aren't the greatest) But given what you had to work with, very good job.

  • @gabi690 there is rotoscoping done, I had to put the guy infront of the arachnid somehow. But like you said, the biggest part is of course the animation and tracking.

  • @darthvenom7830

dude this is not rottoscoping.what he did is to take a shot of the guy runing and then create the the arachnid in 3d animation. and then use 3d tracking to make. a match move camera.

and then he plant the arachnid inside the real footage

  • awesome

  • Holy shit. That guy looks so real.
