HD DVD never got full support from Microsoft. By having HD DVD add on the 360, Msoft indirectly state they were not convinced of HD DVD tech and product. Any add on features other than peripherals are bad indications (Sega anyone). PS3 costs a lot when it was introduced due to the BD drive. That move in which some thought it was a mistake due to shortages and price point may have proved to be the deciding factor in getting BD players in households. Sony was betting on BD market, not just games.
