King David Kalakāua brought Hula back to the Hawaiians. He is remembered for this, among many other things every year at the Merrie Monarch Hula Festival, held in Hilo, Hawaiʻi. You can watch it on streaming video on the Kitv channel 4 website April 3, 4, and 5th 2008, beginning at 6:00 Hawaiian standard time. http://www.kitv.com/index.html The two women at the end of the video were instrumental in the Hawaiian cultural revival that began in the 1970s. Mary Kawena Pukui and Maiki Aiu Lake.

  • Mahalo no! This was so beautiful! My favourite is the picture of the hula dancer on the beach with the image of her kupuna beside her. I think around the 1:20 mark. It brought a tear to my eye. Thanks for sharing!

  • Had to come back to see the beautiful colours and costumes in this film. The colours which are particularly stunning are the inky blues, rich yellow oranges and green leaf in 1:02 - reflecting the sea, sun and vegetation.
