  • Ed moved a 900 lb upright for me around 1974. He came by himself with a couple of carpet covered boxes. Ed (and two of us) moved the piano down a narrow flight of concrete steps.

I recall him lifting one end of the piano and, while kneeling holding it, reached out with one leg and kicked the dolly under it.

But, the reason I remember him so well almost 40 years later is his incredible charm.

    Thanks for the video.

  • i gained alot of insight.

    1) art takes time, even dull times are needed for the better times.

    2) and that you can achieve the same results if not better with less.

  • Amazing guy :)

  • Great documentary. RIP.

  • An awesome, interesting , and altogether nice guy. I met him in '72 when he moved my BIG upright He did moves for me again in 1980, 1989, and 1990. Ed Gong: it was an honor and a pleasure to know you!

  • Oh, I'm so sorry he died before I could thank him for all the joy he brought to my life. I rented a piano from him when I was 21 years old, freshly arrived in San Francisco from "the sticks". Sadly, I had to give it up a few months later, but ten years afterward I was given the money to buy a piano, and of course hired Ed Gong to move it. That was in 1986.

Unlike in this video, he moved my upright piano ALL BY HIMSELF, and it's 26-1/2 steps from the sidewalk to my living room.

    RIP Ed Gong

  • An artist who knows the art of living!

  • RIP Edward Gong whose obituary is on sfgate today
