2008 Medical Heroes

Dr. Lazeni Koulibali and Dr. Justin Rosenfeld work together in the Salem Hospital Emergency Room in Salem, Oregon. They save lives at work but thats not what won them the 2008 Medical Real Hero Award. It was what happened on the soccer field at Bush Pasture Park on their day off that caught our attention.

During the game Koulibali heard someone yell, A man is down, player down, player down.

Rosenfeld, having just run for an out-of-bounds ball, caught sight of the player on the ground.   Instinctively both doctors rushed to the man, who was in need of aid, as the other players backed away. The doctors checked him for responsiveness and then for breathing and pulse.  Finding no pulse or breathing, Rosenfeld began vigorous chest compressions, and called for an ambulance while Koulibali started rescue breathing.

When an ambulance arrived, the doctors used the automated external defibrillator brought to the field by paramedics. Ultimately they saved the mans life.
