45 million people are living with HIV worldwide and there are 16,000 new infections across the globe each day - it is one of the world's greatest challenges.

Australia, and UNSW in particular, is playing a critical role with world-class research, improved treatments and prevention and a greater understanding of the changing social implications of HIV.

One of the world's best-known HIV researchers, UNSW Professor David Cooper, the Director of the National Centre in HIV Epidemiology and Clinical Research (NCHECR) spoke about improved treatment and the quest for a vaccine.
