This is a load of bullshit... is there no longer any honor and factual data in reporting. People will say anything to make up a good news story! I am a sport fisherman from washington and i have spent the last 20 years watching these sea lions invade our waters. Dont listen to reporters in a studio tell that these sea lions are native, this simply isn't true.

Do a little research, these "Califonia sea lions" migrated to our to our coastal and inland saltwater areas about 15 to 20 years ago from california after they successfully depleted the salmon numbers there and outgrew their native habitat. The california sea lion is an invasive species that is quickly displacing our protected native species of pinniped, the harbour seal.

The problem here is that the numbers presented to you are being severely manipulated. Every single salmon caught by sport or commercial fishermen is accounted for. These days commercial fishing is so regulated and so depressed that it is not a profitable business. Fishing villages are now ghost towns. Sport fishermen actually catch less than 1% of the salmon of the salmon killed in washington waters.

Now who's swimming around counting the salmon being killed by sea lions? Since 95 their numbers have ballooned from 188,000 to millions. It has been proven that a single adult male can eat up to 8,000 lbs of salmon a year and up to 200 lbs in a single day! Not to mention they only eat the bellies, not the entire fish. That's a lot of uncounted dead salmon. I urge you to take a trip to our columbia river... experience for yourself the effects of sea lions.

Last year we recorded the worst sport fishery in the history of the river. Yet no sea lions starved to death. I spent countless hours on the river watching sea lions gorge themselves on native salmon as if to taunt us while we caught nothing. To make matters worse they are destroying the docks in Astoria, attacking divers and fishermen, and sinking small watercraft in their gluttonous search for salmon. All we ask is that sea lions be monitored. Individuals are tagged or marked to identify them.

Sea lions documented to repeatedly be a "problem" are subsequently eliminated (much like our justice system for humans)... not "carelessly murdered" as this video would have you believe. We deeply care about our vanishing native salmon runs and are willing to take desperate measures to protect them as they are nearly endangered and extinct just as california's native runs now are. Just thought you might be interested in some TRUTH for a change.
