On 26th May 2009 two campaigners from Glasgow Save Our Schools addressed an SSP European election rally. The Labour Council has gone ahead with their plans to vote to close 22 out of 25 schools despite heavy campaigning against the closures and despite a so-called consultation exercise which was just a sham given that they ignored 96% of parents' views . Parents, bitter at the decision vowed to actively campaign against Labour and some are planning to stand as councillors against New Labour who have let them down. Some have joined the SSP in recognition of the fact that it was primarily the Scottish Socialist Party (along with a few others) who have helped them with their campaign. The party has always fought against cuts in services and this campaign, initiated by parents in local communities, was championed by one SSP member in particular with help from lots of local activists from the party and a few others.
