Writers are resented because they give birth to the work. This kind of creative, emotional power is feared by those who would exploit it for their own purposes. Because most writers are relatively introverted, they don't know what else to do. They want to see the work produced. It really is up to writers to demand respect as a group. There is strength in numbers. And perhaps some of the more charismatic writers should come forward and talk openly, bring it into the light of public discussion.

why have writers been so bad at promoting themselves?
it makes no sense to me other than the understanding that people will walk all over you if you let them.
I notice that writers are now getting a better profile in the 'television mini series world', the HBO effect. What happened in order for this to come into being?
spider.

very true, you can get another director, producer or different actors and still make a good movie, but without the writer you make nothing, yet writers get no respect.
but at least the payscale is better now

Sorry I missed it the first time - no explanation required, beyond I am an idiot.
This is how writers are viewed generally in Hollywood...as the lowest person, below director, producer, actor.

Hi, I don't get the ``bottom feeder'' reference. Could you give a further explanation?
