The photo was taken at least 2 years after the song was released in 1978. Prince didnt look like that until the dirty Mind LP in 1980

He took on a genre of music no one else had the balls to attempt back them. His brand of fuck was unheard of in 1978 when Controversy was released. I was the only person listening to his juicy lyrics back then. And the jam was way before it's time. Something you could move and groove to while everybody else was in full white boy swing in the dance clubs.. He is the King of Cool.

What an amazing assault on popular culture. Whatever he was he was BAD.  I always liked his music but resisted embracing him early on because of what he looked like. Acted like. Then I saw him on the Controversy tour WOW so talented. He's much more then he appeared to be on the surface. I regret to this very day missing the Dirty Mind tour because of my closed mind. Was he Gay? well was he feminine acting but no he was a top notch ladies man and ultimately a person of character seeking God.
