Just found the answer reading comments at another tutorial. For version 2.47, you need to press "U" when entering Edit Mode and select unwrap.

You are very clear that this seems simple. Everything works great until I try to view the texture on the object. The texture does not appear on the object. I have tried it with bmp and png files. they show up in the UV/Mapper window just fine.. But they never appear on the object I have selected. Any ideas?

In object mode, the cube is textured, however, when I render, it is just a plain grey cube. Does anyone know why the texture doesn't show up when the object is rendered?

hi you need to select the cube and then to go into shading (F5) and click the materials button and in material select TexFace and it should show the texture when you render
