A Song for Neda Soltan.....
I have asked myself what right do I have to submit these words
concerning a person from another part of the world that I never met.
How can I truly speak?
Yet, Neda Soltan's life and tragic death on a street in Tehran
profoundly touched my heart and life.
Somehow, unintentionally through the coincidence of time
and events she stopped being just a young college student with family, friends
and a normally anticipated future and became a symbol of peaceful resistance
and freedom over the whole world.
In an instant, her death defying courage became an inspiration and affirmation
of the Living Human Spirit.
So, ultimately, my initial reluctance and doubt about the relevance of my own voice
and words were relieved and the question became how could I not speak,
how can I not humbly express the song in my heart
for Neda, for freedom through peace,
how can I not give what I receive...

the blood of the martyr is still flowing
on a violent city street
the heart of a young girl was pierced by a bullet
as she cried out to be free

she is the Angel of Freedom
she is the Spirit of Light
she is the Angel of Freedom

tenderly they carried her lifeless body
back to the shelter of her family home
they covered her grave with pure white flowers
and the single blossom of a blood red rose

she is the Angel of Freedom

her innocent soul rose up to heaven
her blood soaked deep into the earth
her heart was transformed into a beacon of hope
and her love touched the whole world
