    He didn't die -- in the film Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me, Annie appears to Laura Palmer (before her death and says, "My name is Annie. I've been with Dale and Laura. The good Dale is in the lodge and can't leave." While horrible things tend to happen to good characters in David Lynch's films, they often end, if not exactly happily, at least on a hopeful note (see Wild at Heart or Blue Velvet). I think the real Dale would have returned.
