  • I am having issues with this. The mask layers are off a little and do not match the original still when I save it. Is it likely that it has something to do with the motion properties? Please let me know if you have any troubleshooting techniques for this issue.

  • @bigdennyk

What version of Motion are you running? As long as you are sending content from Final Cut Pro, Motion should mirror the same exact resolution.

Also keep in mind that if you are dealing with interlaced video that has fast moving action, you may want to de-interlace your still image before sending it to Motion. Otherwise, you risk building a matte for the wrong field. Therefore, you're mask would be off a bit.

The de-interlace filter is under the video filters / video category.

  • Wow.... now that's some sort of God Wink.

  • Hi,

Glad you like the tutorial. The first two layers create the cut-out of the football player. The next layer down is just a white matte with a glow filter on it. Without that layer, the glow would affect the entire player. The bottom layer represents the full background.

These videos aren't really 'training' videos' They are just a tease on what the software can do. We plan on offering 'rental' videos that will explain the how things work in more detail.

  • In March, I traveled to Orlando, Florida to compete in the Sports Highlights competition at the National Student Television Network Convention. In one of the clips, I used this technique. Long story short, I ended up taking first place. I wholeheartedly credit this video for allowing me to add that effect, as it made my entry that much more professional. Thanks so much!

  • Great tutorial

I follow your instructions and it worked for me, but when I tried to do it in another part of my video I opened Motion and it opens the clip but not in the place I created the freeze frame in FCP any suggestions?

    Thanks

  • Ok, how crazy is this chain of events. I needed some help polishing up a highlight reel. I was looking for a specific effect and ran across your tutorial. After watching the first part I realized this was my cousin leaping in for a touchdown back when he played for Virginia. At this exact time he posts on his Facebook account that his first child is born. I know it doesn't relate exactly but though it was worth the notation.

  • Always a pleasure to watch.

    You're so calm and passionate.

    I love your tutorials.

    Thanks

  • This is great, exactly what i needed but it would help if you explained why it took 4 layers, the bezier tool, and travel matt alpha to do this. These are great for beginners like me but I"m not really learning anything if i don't understand why these steps were needed.

  • amazing!
