Are computers making our students smarter faster, or are they simply the means for today's youth to keep up with what the earlier generations were able to do on their own?

  • lets put it this way i was going to get a netbook for school then i seen the alienware m11x and i said to myself fuck i allways find myself having tons of free time in school and i would like to be able to play my games like bfbc2 and crysis in school so instead of buying a 350$ netbook i bought a 599$ mini power house that is the alienware m11x

  • @techdudz In other words, there was no educational precedent for your buying decision.

  • K so what you need for grade ten is;

    Binders, pencils, calculator, paper.

  • @roxann8645 It worked for me.

  • i need a computer for my classes, for running network mock up's, making and running code and virtual box, the class threads, using Skype for group projects, and personal use.

  • @gcs8 And I fully understand that part. Using a computer to learn the "computer stuff" is as legitimate as using textbooks to learn the "textbook stuff." Hell, even my school in the mid-90s had an IT / computer science class and a computer lab. But, back then, they supplied the computers just like they would supply textbooks, chairs, desks, etc... Passing a course (especially in a public school) should not have anything to do with what you are or are not in the position to purchase.

  • Im graduating in 3 weeks....and still have NO IDEA why highschools need laptops. i didnt use one in school period.

  • @HexiBase and btw our school laptops have core i7's at 2.4ghz and 4gb dd3 just intel hd graphics

  • @HexiBase no in other words i saved myself a whole lot of a head ache from a netbook slow cpu no good gpu (((would u get a civic or a Veyron)))) its called being smart in this world now of days u need to go ahead and get something that will last for a few years bcuz by next year u dont no if u will have a job or not.

    now i do agree for school work (ONLY) a netbook would be ok but lets be real no one gets a computer just for school.

  • im 17 years old, in 9th grade i had an AUTOCAD CLASS. I dont know about anyone else but am i the olny one.

  • @HexiBase: I totally agree with you calculator opinions! I HATE using my calculator, unless I really have to, and it pisss me off to see lazy retards using it for simple math. In fact I'm probably the only one in my class not "Calculator trained." Oh and the computers might be advertised mostly for college students, at least that's how I see it. (Maybe because, you're not allowed to have portable electronics like laptops in my school.)

  • I agree. I got a flyer from Sonix Electronics ( Car Audio Store) for a back to school sale. WOW.... My son must have a kicker subwoofer and Sony headunit to get a passing grade. All these things are evidence of the marketing world looking at us as sheep. Using key words and phrases to trigger commerce.

  • my old high school district issued all the students mac books for "educational purposes" but all we realy did was get on youtube and myspace and stupid shit like that lol so they werent very usefull for school stuff
