This is perhaps the silly season of campaign 2012 political TV ads - the famous Mitt Romney hates-trash-collectors ad. In this commercial, a man named Richard Hayes speaks directly to the camera. He claims to be Mitt Romney's trash collector, and the only way to describe it is that he's pissed off Mr. Romney did not wake up at the crack of dawn, come outside and ... give him a hug. This TV commercial is produced by a big union, AFSCME, which is a backer of Barack Obama.
At first glance, we thought this commercial was a parody of all the political TV ads, but after research we found that they are dead serious and are running other similar ads as well. This is a good representative sample. The ad also makes a big deal about Romney being rich, showing his 12 million dollar house on the beach in La Jolla, in San Diego, California. The Obama supporters wish to juxtapose Mr. Romney's success with his apparent insensitivity for common workers by ... not hugging. Romney supporters view this as a desperate over-the-top tactic, and point out actually Romney has put on gloves and operated garbage trucks too. What do you think?
