Water heaters are designed to explode from the top. Experience has found that its better to have a hole in your roof than to have it explode sideways and destroy the entire house, killing everybody inside.
-
Yikes I would not want that in my house

Too bad they only overpressured it. To REALLY blow one, plug the T&P valve opening and fire it up. Then you get a *BIG* boiling liquid /expanding vapor explosion, MUCH bigger than simple over-pressurizing.
Why didn't these idiots consult a plumber first on how to really make a water heater missile???

My neighbor went into a new construction house that had a water heater explode in the basement. It went thru 2 2x10 floor joists the 5/8" plywood floor the cieling drywall the 2nd floor joits that plywood floor and thru the cieling joists into the attic where it was stuck 1/2 way out of the roof. The repairs to the house cost almost 7,000 dollars.
