The bestselling author of the Outlander series, Diana Gabaldon, was guest of honour at this year's Inverness Highland Games. We spent the day with her at the Games, accompanied her to her signing session, and found out what her fans think of the series so far.
I love how Diana creates a tapestry from the threads of violence women have shared for centuries, and weaves a fabric of strength and beauty, which we also share. As a survivor of rape and incest, ordinarily I find such violence repugnant. In this case though, I see the weaving is done with sweet care and respect for the delicate threads. Trusting the process of creating, the whole will redeem the parts, proving strength instead of weakness.

I think it's a little sick that all of these women are so drawn into these books which are brutal and chock-full of sexual violence. I'm surprised that people will willingly pick up this sort of violence. I don't believe the author is doing anything positive for the issue of rape and sexual violence that is smeared across nearly every book or film you're likely to read or watch. Her work IS well-written and I'm sure she's a nice person.
