Was VS-22's Corpsman for the 80 Med Cruise, and I was also one of those who had no one waiting for them. But, I remember the excitement of the welcoming crowds.
Thank you. That means alot to me. I had a great time on the Sara. I had a 2nd cousin on my Mom's side of the family who served on the Sara during Vietnam. I didn't know that until he came to Philadelphia to visit his wife's family and he came to see me at drydock. He thought it was cool to see her again after all that time. I know they are trying to setup a museum with her in Rhode Island somewhere and I hope they do because I would definitely make the trip to see her again.
Regardless of whether you stayed in for 20 years or got out after one enlistment, you are still one of us... a "Super Sara" sailor. Your contribution is the same as mine. You are one of us! Thank you for your service.
I was on the 1984 Med Cruise. I was one of those who had nobody to come home to. Was single and all we thought about was getting off the ship and hitting the bars. Lol, if I had with me who I have now things may have been different and I would have probably retired in the USN. Regrets are many for not being a lifer. I didn't know how unrewarding civilian life was going to be. I screwed the pooch boys! May the Sara, USN and America last forever!
