@vb642 No, this was the condition prior to the onset of full scale monsoon. In the monsoon, the line gets shut down due to very high water currents and another bridge near Palia Kalan over the Sharda gets washed off frequently.

This is the first bridge on Ghaghra upstream but surprisingly it came much later around the same time when barrage was constructed. MG lines used to terminate some distance from both banks of the river and then there was a boat crossing. The other bridges on Ghaghra are

Elgin Bridge between Barabanki and Gonda

Katra bridge between Mankapur and Ayodhya (newest bridge and river called Saryu here)

Tutipahar bridge between Bhatni and Mau (again called Saryu here)

Inchcape bridge near Chapra

There are two canals carved out at this place, one goes towards west and other towards east. The west one collects water from Sharda also. Both these canals then turn southwards and then different branch out into lot of branches. These are accountable for 90% of irrigation of Eastern UP.

@hwhraj30211 Thanks for all the valuable information, Samar! Didn't even know about the existing of the barrage. How often do they close this barrage? Doesn't it affect the volume of water downstream from it?

Two rivers meet at this point, Karnali (name of Ghaghra from here till its origin in Nepal) and Gerwa). From this point till its merger with Ganga in Chapra, this river is called Ghaghra except as Saryu at some points between Faizabad and when it enters Bihar. The river is full of water even in dry months. There is a different river Saryu which merges with Ghaghra at Faizabad and may be because of that it carries the name Saryu for some more distance downstream.
