One of the prettiest phase transitions I've yet come across.

It's CE8's smectic A to chiral nematic (aka cholesteric) phase transition at about 145degC followed by the cholesteric colours deepening with increasing temperature as the chiral layers twist up in 180deg increments.

Unfortunately the video really doesn't convey the contrasts between colours at boundaries and the fluidity of it all, under a microscope it's truly awesome!

  • Right, I did not notice the full description

  • Cool. What kind of smectic is it? Is it SmA* -> Cholesteric phase change?

  • This is incredible. What a weird and wonderful world we live in.

  • Very very cool. Liquid crystals are amazing.
