This video is a excerpt from F03728 which shows the British Mark IV tank in action. This is part of a project about the Mark IV tank in the First World War.

Description of full film item:
This film was made by the Royal Armoured Corps School of Tank Technology with assistance from the Imperial War Museum. Traces the development of the tank up to the end of the 1914-1918 war including some vehicles which were produced too late to be used in action. Uses archival film to show how the search for mobility led from armoured cars through tractors to the tank. The majority of the tanks of the period are shown including some specialist vehicles and briefly several French and German Armoured Fighting Vehicles.

  • they got really sick in them :(

  • These are the units that contributed so much to the ending of trench warfare.

  • Bear in mind, when you watch the tank rise over the trench then smack into the other side, that these tanks had no suspension at all! Think of the crew.. rising..rising...hold on lads....WHAM!

Even if you didnt get killed in one of these, you would end up half dead from fumes and carbon monoxide and battered black and blue after just a few hours of fighting.

  • slow but terrible!

  • Really incredible to see these things move.

  • yes

  • The first tanks shown here are Mk IV. The later ones are Mk V*.
