Part 1. Is Democracy for Everyone?
In this interview with CIPE, Larry Diamond discussed the findings of his new book "The Spirit of Democracy: The Struggle to Build Free Societies Throughout the World." The book focuses on recent democracy-related trends and evaluates the causes of the democratic recession in crucial parts of the world. The desire for democracy, Diamond argues, runs deep even in very poor countries and in the turbulent Middle East. Interestingly, he suggests that through expanding economic freedom, civic mobilization, and the development of "liberation technology," even seemingly entrenched regimes like those in Iran and China could well become democracies within a generation.
