She was born in America in 1970 under her Filipino name Maglalang, automatically gaining U.S. citizenship. Her parents were not U.S. citizens in 1970 - they were from the Philippines; her father Dr. Apolo Maglalang entered the U.S. on a work visa from the Philippines while her mother was pregnant. A few months after the Maglalangs entered the U.S., Michelle Maglalang (eventually married to Jesse Malkin) was born.
