Also for those not used to current robots, there is a lot of safety you can enable through software itself. More than likely there were safety "zones" set up on the floor, behind the robot, etc. that you could stand in so as not to be hit
Most industrial robots have ports on the inside controller that you can feed axis information into - google online about this and you can find guides to having wii gyro info output relate to axis info and it's a somewhat "easy" step to this kind of control. Making it totally error free is a more complicated task.
