Another fine song about Joe McCann, Staff Captain, Belfast Brigade Official IRA, who was shot down by British Paratroops while unarmed in Joy Street Belfast in April 1972. While lying wounded Joe was shot ten more times at close range. Joe was not only a great guerilla fighter and leader, but also a true Socialist Revolutionary involved in all areas of the peoples'
struggle. May he rest in peace. Had he been here today he would have been totally against the Lisbon Treaty with all his might, seeing it for what it is: another sellout of the Irish People's rights to a corrupt international Capitalist organisation by a gombeen government. This song was written by the Belfast songwriter known as "McIlvogue" who produced many fine songs in the early 1970s. It is performed here by the great Belfast band The Men of No Property.

  • @homerbhoy1 - Indeed, a great loss. A man of many talents, and just an all around good man.

  • Satyrix1: The band was "The Men of No Property". The singer was Brian Moore (RIP). He died a few months ago. His used the Nom de Guerre "McIlvogue" on the three of four albums they produced. He was also very well known as "Cormac", the cartoonist for An Phoblacht / Republican News for many years.

  • that is Joe Mc Cann in the picture with the weapon>

  • @bradleymax09

Yes indeed, that is Big Joe at about 110 and 130 in this video. These phots were taken the night of "The Battle of Inlis'Bakery" when Joe and about 5 of his men held off 600 British soldiers.

The photo Big Joe with his M1 Carbine remains one of the most iconic images of the Irish Struggle.
