True. But When Bella went to go see J. and Max was on the phone with him Bella was closer and a newborn vampire which means her senses are better,ecspecially hearing. And in New Moon Alice wasn't actually listening to Bella she was concentrating on her visions and Jasper wasn't in the room.

I may have commented on this before, but I think it's because Bella was a newborn when she went to go visit that guy Alice had mentioned, thus giving her better hearing than a regular vampire. Also, at the time Bella was conversing with James, Alice was pretty tuned out because she was focusing on her vision.
