Socotra archipelago has a unique and distinct flora and fauna with over 30% of plants only native to the island such as the Dragon's Blood Tree, the Cucumber tree, the Frankincense or the Begonia herb.

Fatima and her father Adeeb Abdallah take care of a unique nursery.

[Fatima Abdallah, Plant Nursery Assistant]:
"The island is important for its plant diversity because there are rare plants which don't exist anywhere else in the world. This has attracted the attention of scientists and botanists and this is why it's one of the most important islands in the world."

To help protect this UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Abdallah family are building up eco-lodges to promote eco-tourism and so help reduce the impact of mass tourism in the area.

[Abdallah Adeeb, Plant Nursery Director]:
"Our work plan is to combine the plant nursery with tourism. We came to this place and then built lodges to establish a tourist site.

The family hopes to teach eco tourists how to propagate, grow out and preserve the Socotra endemic plants.

This is a view shared by the Yemeni Minister of Environment.

[Abdul-Rahman Al-Eryani, Minister of Water and Environment]:
What we are looking for is quality tourists, people who like nature, and appreciate wilderness and camping."

And so eco-tourism may be the solution against the over-exploitation of Socotra's natural resources.

  • My mom and sister wear those black clothes and it doesn't bother them.

During the 80s and 90s it was common to see women wear the veil and match it with long colorful skirts and dresses, but the country became more conservative and those trends started disappearing as the black clothes became more common.

Today if a woman doesn't follow this dress code, she'll stick out and attract unwanted attention. that's the purpose of black. To divert unwanted attention.

  • look at her working with nature, she is all smiles!
