This is just my personal experience with weaning my son off of the contact nipple shields. I hope this is helpful! :)

  • I too, was unaware that I had flat nipples. Before having her, I would see those "Playtex Nurser System" commercials, and hear them say, "shaped more like Mom's own nipple..." Well, NOT MINE! I NEVER would have gotten Kelly to nurse successfully if a kind maternity nurse had not "slipped me" (hush!) a nipple shield! It DID draw my nipples out her to eventually nurse just skin to skin, what a wonderful bonding experience!

  • @Ritterrit aww so happy it worked out for you too :) at first the lactation consultant was hesitant to recommend it. Everyone else could get him to latch, but just him and I on our own, I couldn't do it! So I broke down and went to Target and just bought one. It saved me from quitting breastfeeding!

  • Stephanie, when you were using the medela breast shells did you find your nipples were drawn out more? As the actually silicon 'nipple' seems HUGE!

I'm 20 weeks pregnant with my 2nd baby and had a awful time breastfeeding with no help with my son, not realising i had flat nipples.

im trying to get all the products i need, so that I can have a stressfree time! x

  • @sauc1l do you mean the shells or the shields? the shells didn't work at all...the nipple shields did draw my nipple out because they allowed Jack to actually suck and get milk out with them. The silicon nipple is big, but that's the whole point of it...and don't worry, it doesn't suck the whole nipple into it :) good luck with everything!!

  • I watched your video about a month ago and was inspired to keep working with my baby on weaning from the nipple shield. I even had her watch the video. Well, it WORKED!!! We have been nipple shield free for about three weeks. It is so wonderful to be without the shield. Thank you so much.

  • @ruralredhead so happy to hear that! just you and baby, such a good feeling right? :D

  • even if your nipples are large the sheild helps...

  • have you noticed she said ummm alot :D

  • Continued...I was super happy that she weaned herself from it. It's way more convenient not having to worry about leaving the shield at home when we went out. I did notice that my daughter drained my breasts much faster as well without the shield. We are at 8 1/2 months now & still breastfeeding. :)

  • The contact nipple shield is the biggest reason I didn't give up breastfeeding! My daughter would not latch on at all, so I was having to pump every 2-3 hours & fees her. I bought the nipple shield & she latched on perfectly! She used it until she was 3 1/2 months & one day she pulled off the breast, pulled the nipple shield off & jumped right back on the breast.

  • sorry , I meant the Medela soft shells , not sheilds.

The silicon just looks so huge!? I'm hoping that they work for me. I have really found your videos informative and so helpful. I have also bought latch assist which looks good but has bad reviews here in England.

    I'm so worried! x
