your kind of wrong, s waves cant go through water, oh and depending on soil type it could vary. You could be miles from the epicenter but your place gets rocked harder then most places if you live on a loose sediment ground

I lived just 2 blocks east from northridge fashion center i was only 7 that time, i could recall i was waking up due to loud noises, like million ton of rock has just dropping right in to my house n then next thing i knew it my bedroom was being slammed upward and then yanked back and forth but still it does bounced in between from yanking back and forth, i could never forget that feeling and it was very instense, cuz it just waking you up with the house dancing, CREEPY!

what city were you in when that quake struck? Because if your way far away from the epicenter and the strength of motion quake will go much more weaker.

not necessarily. Depending on mountian ranges P, S, L and R waves will be absorbed by a mountain range, and they will then radiate around it and could even destroy a city on the opposite side of it. Also if there is a lake, P waves can't travel through water.

Trillions of Dollars worth of damage was caused by this Earthquake. Almost 6000 people were killed and the motion apparently only lasted for 20 or so seconds...
