"Star Dust" (1931)
Victor Salon Orchestra
Conducted by Nathaniel Shilkret
Orthophonic Victor 22848
I recorded this using a free program called "Audacity" but I couldn't get my Equalizer to connect. Please let me know what you think of the sound quality. Thanks. :)
You did it great!

Would this be a song you could hear on old radio in the 1930's?

This is really nice. The jazz song of all time.

Maybe just a little too sweet and lush, with those fiddles and the harp. A Hoagy song should give you a mental picture of Hoagy at the keyboard finishing his 18th carton of killer sticks that day and surrounded by smoke.

There is a radio on playing this song, in the diner outside Denver on a Nov. night in 31 and I am at the counter talking to Flo the waitress about Hoover and where the jobs might be in the territory, and whether I can hitch a ride with someone driving past. And Flo tells me her troubles and how she was in the money in Topeka in 28, and how she likes Star Dust by the Victor Salon Orchestra.

Your transfer is great. I do not mind any surface noise at all. The fidelity is perfect. This is just before Victor went to their new improved Orthophonic process which was quite brighter w/broader range. (Listen to "Strike Me Pink" by Arden/Ohman on Victor from 1932). Shilkret's arrangment is a very sensitive approach to this song, I like the Whiteman on Victor as well, but it is a little overblown, Johnny Houser as vocalist sounds a little "snotty" and arrogant.

...come to think of it, it so reminds me of the kind of song that could have (and if I wrote it) WOULD HAVE been included in a film of yester-year. God, it reminds me of some film where it should have been included. Let me think. Maybe--Penny Serenade--with Cary Grant/Irene Dunn--and 'apple jack.' Anybody remember? It just so suits so many others, as well.
