The following is a method of putting plates in register before actually printing, on a wide-web CI flexo press:
Method to help ensure rapid registration during setup of older wide-web flexo presses:
Plates:
• Make plates with built-in register marks, or carefully make marks or lines on plate for vertical (web direction) registering.
Scribe line on cylinder:
• Designate a horizontal scribe line on each cylinder as the reference line.
• For each cylinder, mark the gear that aligns with the designated reference line.
o When you do this depends on your press.
o If gear doesn't have a mark, use whiteout or similar items to mark gear.
o With careful coordination, gears can be stamped or engraved with reference marks on tooth.
Mount to line:
• Mount plates to designated horizontal lines on plate cylinders.
o Apply tape strategically.
The plate position determines the tape position.
Some folks mark mounting tape with pen.
o Align register marks to scribe line and mount.
Dry-register in press:
• Observe normal cylinder gapping procedures.
• Mesh first color with drum gear.
• Mark main drive gear on drum with whiteout, or similar marker, at point where marked tooth on first color is meshed with drive gear.
• Jog press and align the marked tooth of each gear of remaining plate cylinders to the mark on the drive gear, as it reaches each station.
o MUST GET THIS ON FIRST PASS!
Proceed with setup, as usual:
• Suggest last-to-first print station sequence for setting impression, but that another story!
