Fox News Channel 10 (Phoenix) story about teenager Brendan, 19, who sleeps 12-16 hours at a time, and is asleep more than he's awake. Doctors struggle to figure out why. Sleep doctor Michael Breus comments on how sleep disorders are on the rise, and says there are between 85-88 identified sleep disorders at the time of this news story. Many of these disorders are mysterious, and doctors are still struggling to understand and treat them. In a nation where 1 out of 3 Americans are sleep-deprived and stay awake longer than they should, Brendan's sleep disorder is rare.

  • he needs some amphetamines or something to regulate his wakefulness/sleep cycle.

  • I'm 15. and I was just diagnosed with narcolepsy. I always limp when get sad, i have sleep paralaysis when i wake up, I slept 12 hours a day, and always felt extremely sick. When they did my sleep and nap study ( I had 6) I always fell asleep withing 8 minutes and hit REM in 20 minutes. Narcolepsy Is terrible, I hate it. Its painful, and not to mention debilitating. I had to quit 3 after school clubs because I was too tired.

  • this is probably Kleine Levin Syndrome. Check out this site: klslife.com

  • There was a news story about a girl named Louisa Ball who once slept for 13 day straight, she was diagnosed with a rare disease called Kleine-Levin Syndrome. People who suffer from the syndrome live normally for months at a time, with normal sleep behavior until with no warning, they’ll go to sleep for days or weeks at a time.
