The third step of the topspin tennis forehand progressions is to start in the ready position, pivot and turn your shoulders and get straight into the racket back position, which we worked on in the previous video in this series. There should be NO LOOP when the tennis racket comes back. Focus on the pivot and shoulder turn, and from the racket back position make sure you are rotating your body into the shot. Brush up on the tennis ball to hit with topspin and follow through like we taught in step one.

  • Like I said, on a SIMPLE TEXTBOOK forehand, which is what a beginner should use, you drive through the ball more than you brush up. Beginners can't just go out there and have a stroke like Roger Federer, or Nadal. They need a simple easy to do way, then they make progressions, so after a while you can hit huge amounts of topspin and penetrating forehands. You can't just go out there and hit like Federer right away.

  • Not when you're just learning how. If you keep your swing stiff when you first start playing it keeps your racket face from pointing to far up or too far down. If you try to emulate the pros right off the bat you'll hit everything into the net or everything out of the court. People need to learn the basic concept of a forehand before it becomes fluid and powerful.
