My guess is the mother went in and all the ducklings followed suit, except the mom could fly out.
Ducks can be not very smart about these things; there's a story about a duck that nested on a hanging planter thing in the city, so when the eggs hatched the only way the ducklings could get out was to fall several feet onto the hard pavement below. A man from an office building nearby actually had to go out and catch each of the ducklings so they wouldn't hurt themselves. :)

I know it's been awhile, but ducks in the wild will lay their eggs in trees. The ducklings are able to jump out and land safety 20 or even 30 feet high.
The problem was instead of landing on soil, leaves, and grass they would have hit pavement.

@cosmic201 I wasn't aware of that (never actually thought about where ducks nested), although I will say I was being tongue in cheek in my previous comment. :B
