I am What I am is a Gay torch song. Composed in 1983 by Jerry Herman, an openly gay man for the broadway musical La Cage aux Folles (1983–1987) It's the finale number of the musical's first act performed by the gay character Albin Mougeotte. La Cage Folles focuses on gay couple Georges & Albin and the farcical adventures that ensue when Georges' son, Jean-Michel, brings home his fiancée's ultra-conservative parents to meet them. It will always be a gay & lesbian torch song for ALL to enjoy :-)
