Gloria Gaynor - I am what I am 1998
Released 1983

(interrupted by some comments)

I am what I am
I don't want praise I don't want pity
I bang my own drum
Some think it's noise I think it's pretty
And so what if I love each sparkle and each bangle
Why not see things from a different angle
Your life is a shame
Till you can shout out I am what I am

I am what I am
And what I am needs no excuses
I deal my own deck
Sometimes the aces sometimes the deuces
It's one life and there's no return and no deposit
One life so it's time to open up your closet
Life's not worth a dam till you can shout out
I am what I am

I am what I am
I don't want praise I don't want pity
I bang my own drum
Some think it's noise I think it's pretty
And so what if I love each sparkle and each bangle
Why not see things from a different angle
Your life is a shame
Till you can shout out I am what I am

I am what I am
And what I am needs no excuses
I deal my own deck sometimes the aces sometimes the deuces
It's one life and there's no return and no deposit
One life so it's time to open up your closet
Life's not worth a dam till you can shout out
I am what I am

  • Why the germans! - not necessary !!

  • I am What I am is a Gay torch song. Composed in 1983 by Jerry Herman, an openly gay man for the broadway musical La Cage aux Folles (1983–1987) It's the finale number of the musical's first act performed by the gay character Albin Mougeotte. La Cage Folles focuses on gay couple Georges & Albin and the farcical adventures that ensue when Georges' son, Jean-Michel, brings home his fiancée's ultra-conservative parents to meet them. It will always be a gay & lesbian torch song for ALL to enjoy :-)

  • @foxymanish I GET SO FRUSTRATED WITH NARROWMINDEDNESS LIKE YOURS THIS SONG IS UNIVERSAL NOT JUST FOR GAYS I'M SURE IT APPLIES TO YOU TOO... IT'S FOR ANYONE WHO HAS ANY PERSONALITY LEFT IN THEIR BRAINS AND BODIES
