The person who wrote the comment below need to get some education. At the time when most of these monuments were built, masonry was so prevalent as to be ubiquitous. In other words, it may have been a society, but it was far from secret. This doesn't imply that the people who built the obelisk were thinking of Egyptian sun gods, just that they were familiar with standard masonic symbols. The trouble with conspiracies and uneducated people is that one is liable to see the other EVERYWHERE.

A lot of masonic symbolism in Washington DC, the obelisk (George Washington Monument) symbolizes the sun god Ra, and you can see them in most masonic cities including London, Paris, Vatican (Yes where the pope is), etc. George Washington himself was a freemason. ALL American presidents are masons (with the exception of a very few people like JFK) and this can be seen in their hand-signs and secret handshakes.....Secret societies are NOT a good thing in this world. EXPOSE THEM!!!
