http://www.pbs.org/independentlens/orderofmyths/ The doctrine, "separate but equal" ended in the 1950s, right? Think again. At America's oldest Mardi Gras—celebrated each year in Mobile, Alabama -- events remain segregated between white and black residents. Beneath the surface of pageantry, lies a complex story about race relations and the ever-present racial divide that persists in America today.

THE ORDER OF MYTHS premieres Tuesday, February 24 on Independent Lens, a weekly series airing on PBS. Hosted by Terrence Howard, the acclaimed series showcases powerful and innovative independent films. Presented by ITVS, Independent Lens is broadcast on PBS stations nationwide. • Will be seeing the movie tomorrow night at the CAC in New Orleans. FYI the first Mardi Gras was celebrated on March 3,1699 on the land which was not America unitl 1803. Iberville celebrated with the Houma Indians on March 20,1699. He landed on his campsite on Mardi Gras Day and named it Pointe Du Mardi Gras.

  • This documentary is simply amazing. Mind blowing... And yes, I agree with januaryair: Eye opening.

  • I do!! I also remember the incident Michael Donald, who was lynched and hung as a random show of "Klan strength in Alabama". However, the following unrest, trials, and lawsuits actually resulted in the Klan in Alabama being bankrupted and banned from having any organizational presence within the state. Myself, as a young child..the result was possibly the fact that i have never knowingly been exposed to blatant racism in the city of Mobile. Not saying it doesnt exist, but I never experienced it.

  • If you get a chance to watch this; do. (Check your pbs stations) Absolutely amazing. Eye opening. To a Northern, it was crazy. Educational. I just watched the entire program moments ago on IPTV and my brain is crazy with a million thoughts. At 32, living where I do, I have never known a difference in human beings or been exposed to differential treatment. Am I ignorant, unaware, or lucky, blessed? Grateful. Watch this one people. Notice the producer. Great job. Thank you for thought

  • ALABAMA ! Ironically this is the State where the ORIGINAL Black Panther Party was organized (Third political party). Remember those days ?
